Radio Show

Video Show

This week my group began working on our video show, which will be a sequel to our radio show. It will be called Noir NOT The Father: The Reunion. This show will have a similar format to our radio show, and will include flashbacks into all of our characters’ pasts, as well as new twists. This week we outlined our ideas for the show and also made our trailers. Here is my trailer.

Radio Show Final Reflection

It was very cool to listen to my group’s radio show, Noir NOT The Father, live last week. I think we did a really good job and we got a lot of good feedback from people who liked different aspects of the show. I enjoyed working in a group setting for the first time in this class, and I also enjoyed doing more work with sound editing. The hardest part of the process was definitely coming up with the material for the script. The only thing I would do different in the future is hire some actual actors to act out the parts, because although my group gave it their all, we aren’t the greatest actors in the world. My advice for future ds106 students would be to make sure you get in a good group, and have fun with this project.

NoirTALK Review

For my radio listen this week I listened to NoirTALK. This show was very intriguing but also went over my head at time. The sound effects really drew me in to the show, and the characters were very interesting. Damon in particular was very awkward and secretive. This show has a lot of good things going for it. At the same time, there were a couple of points where I wasn’t sure exactly what was going on. At the end, in particular, there was some sort of explosion but I don’t know what the purpose of it was. That aside, I am curious to hear about how the plot thickens for these characters as the weeks go on. Here are my tweets from my live listen-along.

Noir Not The Father is here!

After two weeks of hard work, my group’s radio show “Noir Not The Father” is done; courtesy of myself, Cuyler Matteson, Mia Boleis, Kelsey Roach, and Philip Dorch.

Last week I explained how we had formed our group, come up with the concept for our show (a Maury style talk show), and outlined what we were going to do and who needed to do what. This week we put it all together! My individual job coming into this week was to make one of the radio bumpers that we would use for the show. I put a lot of effort into making this bumper and it was definitely the best audio work I have done thus far in ds106. I layered three different sounds on top of each other in this bumper. It starts out with music- the song is called “Higher Ground” by TNGHT. The music fades in until it is at full volume, at which point my voice comes in to remind listeners of what they’re tuned in to. Then the music cuts off abruptly and is replaced by a raucous crowd cheering enthusiastically- a sound that I pulled from an actual Maury show. As the cheering sound slowly fades out, the music fades back in to full volume, and then my voice comes back in on top of that to tell listeners not to go away. Finally, the music fades away as the bumper ends. Take a listen!

Cuyler and Philip were also in charge of making bumpers, and they did a great job. Mia and Kelsey had the job of making the commercials for the show, and Mia also made our theme song, which is so cool I just have to include it separately to show you all.

Once we had all these components, we were ready to hammer out a script. We met twice at the convergence center as a group; on Monday evening for two hours and then on Wednesday for a whopping five hours! We took full advantage of this time to create a script that is equal parts funny, witty, entertaining, and noir-ish. We ended up dividing the actual writing up fairly evenly, as most of us did all the writing for our own character. Everyone in our group worked very hard and exceeded their individual responsibilities. It was a joy to work with my group. The final thing we did was record the show. This was the most fun part of the entire process. I wish that we could show you all of the bloopers and outtakes from our recording session, because they were hilarious. In the end, we had created one hell of a radio show. Without further ado, here it is!

Radio Show Progress

This week I began work on my radio show with my group. We had our first group meeting on Wednesday, where I met Mia Boleis, Kelsey Roach, and Cuyler Matteson. Mia and Kelsey already had an idea of the type and content of the show that we could do- they were very prepared. We have decided to do a Maury-style talk show hosted by Kelsey’s character, Stella Vaughn. The show will take elements from Maury, and combine them with others that we have come up with, such as a murder investigation, to create a program that will be sure to keep the audience on the edge of their seats. We have created a google doc that we can all access that includes an outline of our show idea, as well as lists the requirements that we need to complete. Since Wednesday, we have all completed some sort of promo for our radio show, as was assigned for this week. In addition, we have split up some of the other work that we need for our show. Cuyler and I, as well as Philip Dorch who was recently added to our group, are in the process of creating radio bumpers for our show and the ds106 station. Mia and Kelsey are working on commercials. This coming week we will be meeting at least twice to hammer out the final details of our show, and record our final product.

Noir Not The Father- Promotional Poster

With our radio show project coming up soon, I have created a promotional poster for our show, Noir Not The Father! Since our show is a Maury-style talk show, I found a great photo depicting a crowd reaction from a similar show. The photo is actually taken from the Jerry Springer Show, which is very similar to Maury. Then I used Microsoft Paint to edit the photo and add captions to it. You can see the finished product below. Noir Not The Father will be presented by myself, Mia Boleis, Kelsey Roach, Cuyler Matteson, and Philip Dorch. I hope this poster helps you all get excited about our show!
